More about Natalie Vowell - Secretary, Board of Education, St. Louis City

Natalie Vowell is a product of one of the top public schools in the United States in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She enrolled at the University of Arkansas at age 17 to study computer science and music theory. A few semesters into her education, Natalie was offered a job in her field at the University's Enhanced Learning Center—as the University's youngest and first female computer lab manager. She has always been an advocate for women entering the tech industry. In 2010, Natalie moved from her hometown to St. Louis City.

Natalie continued her dedication to technology education as the Program Development Director and later a Board Member for WITS (now Computers For The People), a local nonprofit in Baden which accepts unwanted electronics and rebuilds them into free or low-cost computers for families, schools, teachers, and staff—instead of polluting landfills. Natalie helped provide over 1,000 free computers for families in need, and led family workshops for kids and parents to assemble their own computers from recycled parts. Meanwhile, she volunteer lobbied for environmental legislation in Jefferson City.

For the past three years, Natalie has spoken alongside 100 Black Men of St. Louis and HOT 104.1 on the high school SWAG tour, registering over 200 seniors to vote. She served as a Congressional District One delegate to the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and is passionate about getting our youth engaged in the democratic process by guiding them toward becoming innovators and activists in their communities.

In 2013, Natalie founded Project Raise The Roof, an all-volunteer organization whose purpose is to stop the seizure of owner-occupied homes at the Sheriff’s tax auctions to keep those properties on the tax rolls—generating funds for our schools—and prevent them from becoming more vacant board-ups owned by the Land Reutilization Authority. As of 2017, she has assisted over 60 people in retaining their family homes. Natalie and her husband have chosen to make their permanent home in Wells/Goodfellow, North St. Louis.

Natalie is excited to bring her passion to elected office, and wants to hear from you. Natalie is available 24 hours per day via e-mail, phone, or text.
