More about Nevada Humane Society

Nevada Humane Society (NHS) is a charitable, non-profit organization founded in 1932. Its mission is to bring people and animals together to create a no-kill community in Washoe County. NHS provides shelter and care to homeless pets, low-cost spay/neuter, pet adoption and other services for the community.

In early 2007, NHS launched a bold new effort, adopting the no-kill policy. NHS does not euthanize animals for time or space, only for medical problems where an animal has poor prognosis of recovering to a quality life or for extreme aggression in large dogs that are deemed too high of a risk if placed back into the community. Thanks to the amazing support of the community and the hard work of the dedicated staff, volunteers, and rescue partners, NHS has achieved dramatic results. Washoe County is now one of the safest communities in the nation for homeless animals.

In order to achieve its mission, NHS needs to achieve and maintain a save rate of 90% or greater for homeless pets in Washoe County. The primary strategies for accomplishing this include increasing the number of pets leaving area shelters alive, and reducing the number of pets coming into area shelters.

NHS encourages you to visit its website www.nevadahumanesociety.org for news, statistics, and information on the latest pet adoption promotion. The website also invites people to volunteer or sign up for the NHS e-newsletter.
