Hope Starts Here

The unexpected diagnosis of a tumor of the central nervous system can be a profoundly confusing and frightening experience. In America, 45,000 individuals are diagnosed with primary brain tumors each year, while 170,000 individuals are diagnosed with metastatic brain tumors.* Such a diagnosis raises questions for the patient and their loved ones about what the future holds – from available treatment options to appropriate care. Knowledge is the most powerful weapon. At the New Jersey Neuroscience Institute (NJNI) Brain Tumor Center, our team is armed with increasing information to answer your questions. They make treatments that were not possible yesterday available today. Hope is here.

Your first chance at beating a brain or spinal cord tumor is your best chance. And, your best chance is at a comprehensive brain tumor center. Established in 1997, the NJNI Brain Tumor Center stands at the forefront in the diagnosis and treatment of primary and metastic tumors of the brain and spinal cord. Together, our specialists employ the latest breakthroughs in research, medical technology, techniques and treatments available. A Unique Approach to Care

The NJNI Brain Tumor Center is a truly collaborative effort, where shared passion supersedes departmental and discipline boundaries. We provide expert care and guidance with a patient-centered philosophy. Here, the combined knowledge and expertise of many is brought to bear on difficult problems, leading to powerful exchanges and unexpected solutions for patients and their families. Our internationally recognized multidisciplinary team of specialists is assembled from around the country — a distinctive strength that enables the NJNI Brain Tumor Center to determine effective strategies to detect, diagnose and treat tumors. The goal of the multidisciplinary team, also referred to as the Brain Tumor Board, is to provide care across specialties for patients with an emphasis on new developments in treatment and participation in clinical trials. The Brain Tumor Board also provides a forum to educate physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers and to share relevant research findings.

Led by a board-certified, fellowship trained neuro-oncologist — one of only 280 in the United States expertly trained in this specialized branch of medicine — the interdisciplinary team is comprised of a broad range of specialized fields including:

Neurosurgery and Pediatric Neurosurgery
Physician Assistant
Neuroradiology
Radiation Oncology
Neuropsychiatry
Radiation Physics
Nursing
Neuropathology
This level of expertise and specialization can have a powerful effect on a patient’s chances for the successful treatment and management of the tumor. Our approach leads to a unified, personalized treatment plan that benefits from the combined clinical and research expertise of these specialists. Together, the team ensures that comprehensive, coordinated care is available to guide each patient and his/her family through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. And, during follow-up visits, our team continues to monitor and modify the course of treatment specific to the prognosis and the patient’s needs and overall health.

The NJNI Brain Tumor Center focuses not only on survival but also on the quality of the patient’s life during and after treatment. In addition to this core team, the program incorporates other disciplines, such as hematology/oncology, neuroophthalmologic otoneurology, physical rehabilitation medicine, adult and pediatric critical care specialists and support services.
