More about Newton Food Pantry

Founded in 1983 and run solely by volunteers, the Newton Food Pantry is the oldest and largest food pantry in the city. For over 30 years the Newton Food Pantry’s committed volunteers have provided food to residents of our city who experience food insecurity.

Although Newton is viewed as an affluent suburb of Boston, in fact 1-8 households survive on less than $25,000 in income.* The Newton Food Pantry presently provides supplemental food to between 600-700 Newton residents each month, and that number increases each year. Our clients include working parents, children, senior citizens, the disabled, and many others in our city who do not have enough food to carry them through the month. In addition to offering food at our location in the basement of the Waban Library Center, the Newton Food Pantry provides home delivery of groceries to over 40 client households, and has partnered with other non-profits in the city providing food to the Teens at Risk program at the YMCA, the Zola Center For Persons with Disabilities in Newton Highlands, and needed families at Family Access (formerly the Newton Community Service Center) and Second Step.

The Newton Food Pantry does not receive any city, state or federal funding but instead relies exclusively upon donations (financial and in-kind) from individuals, businesses, religious institutions, schools, and grants from other non-profits. Over the past two years, the Newton Food Pantry has worked to improve its services by expanding the amount and diversity of food offerings to include more fresh fruit and produce, dairy, and protein options, as well as providing much needed personal care items. With childhood obesity and other diet-related diseases on the rise, and so many unhealthy options that present less expensive choices for our clients, we are hopeful that our efforts to provide more healthy options for our clients will have a positive impact on their health and lives.

In order to continue to fulfill our mission to provide nutritionally balanced supplemental food to Newton residents experiencing food insecurity, we need and appreciate your support. To learn more about the Newton Food Pantry and/or donate, please go to www.newtonfoodpantry.org.
