North Dakota Boy's State started in 1938, on the campus of then North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton by the American Legion as a way to teach patriotism, citizenship and a better understanding of how government works. In 1947 NDBS moved to NDSU in Fargo, due to a commitment to the US Navy training at NDSSS. In 1996 NDBS returned to NDSCS in Wahpeton due to the technologies available and closeness of campus facilities. Boy's State has been held annually every June except in 1943 - 1946 (WWII) and in 1957 due to the tornado that did major damage and took several lives in Fargo.
