The Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system is comprised of 10 volunteer rescue squads. Each squad is individually owned and operated and required to raise its own funding for equipment and supplies.
The Virginia Beach City Department of Emergency Medical Services is the largest volunteer rescue system in the United States with over 900 members. The combined rescue squads respond to over 40,00 calls for service each year.
