Operation Adopt

OPERATION ADOPT brings shelter dogs and cats into a trendy retail strip of Magnolia Park in a "rescue-only" pet shop setting.

In 2013, Burbank passed legislation to prohibit the sales of dogs and cats in pet shops unless they come from shelters, rescue groups or humane societies. This legislation effectively prohibited the retail sale of “puppy mill” puppies where commercial breeders keep animals in deplorable conditions with minimal vet care or human interaction.

Similar legislation has been passed across the country in counties and municipalities in California, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Illinois, New Mexico, Texas and onward into Canada and British Columbia.

The Animal Protectorates (whose founders were key in getting the “puppy mill” legislation passed in Burbank and neighboring Glendale) never believed they would one day open a store that fulfilled the spirit of what the ordinance epitomized – why import commercially bred animals into the City when shelters in Los Angeles County (and beyond) are euthanizing adoptable animals daily because there is no space for them.

OPERATION ADOPT is Burbank's first nonprofit rescue-only pet store and education center. It is a place where orphaned dogs, cats, puppies and kittens get a second chance and where the community learns how to show compassion to all livings through the unique relationship we have with animals and the duty we have to protect and care for them.

It is an all volunteer run organization with many opportunities to fulfill the philanthropist in you.
