Essential oils are derived directly from the stems, leave, bark, or petals of plants and trees. They can be extracted in a variety of ways, we use a brand that is distilled by steam distillation, a process that forces steam through the plant matter, releasing the oil, which is then separated from the water. The resulting oil is called "essential oil" and the water is called "hydrosol". This eliminates the use of chemicals to distill the essential oil, making it a higher quality essential oil.

Natural hydrating products also tend to cause much less irritation for people with sensitive skin while still locking in moisture, since they’re free from additives, fragrances, colors and dyes used in most commercial products. Here is a list of our favorite oils to make our soaps with:

Beef Tallow- a rendered animal fat that has been used for hundreds of years in soapmaking. The abundance of fat soluble vitamins (A,D,K and E) that naturally occur in pastured tallow, along with the potent anti-inflammatory conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and anti-microbial palmitoleic acid, make it a perfect ingredient to feed your skin.

Castor OIl-an extract of the castor bean plant. It creates large, luxurious bubbles. Castor oil can be used to moisturize dry skin. Being highly viscous, the oil stays put, and penetrates deep into the skin tissue and nourishes it with fatty acids. It's anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial properties make it ideal for treatment of rashes, itches and bug bites.

Cocoa Butter-extracted from the cacao bean, it has a nutty, chocolate-y aroma. Cocoa Butter is a natural moisturizer that melts at room temperature which makes it ideal for your skin. Its health benefits come from its cocoa mass polyphenol, which is great for naturally healing dry, sensitive skin. Cocoa butter makes an excellent skin moisturizer, plus it does more than just hydrate the skin — it helps actually heal it from the inside out too. It is especially beneficial for healing dry, cracked skin because they’re easily absorbed and remain on the skin for hours.

Coconut Oil-expeller pressed from the meat of coconuts. It creates lather with large bubbles and helps to cut down on oils and grease. It has a high cleansing ability. Coconut oil is naturally antibacterial, antifungal, moisturizing and, according to research, great for atopic dermatitis. Coconut oil also is able to penetrate your skin on a deeper level than your average product because of its low molecular weight and the way it bonds with proteins. It contains saturated fats that helps the skin stay moisturized, with the fat preventing moisture loss through the skin’s pores. These fats give the skin a healthy, smooth and even tone.

Olive OIl-Naturally, olive oil is packed with anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating squalene, making it superb for hair, skin, and nails. Olive oil contains three major antioxidants: vitamin E, polyphenols, and phytosterols. Antioxidants, when topically applied, may help protect the skin from premature skin aging. Vitamin E partly accounts for the anti-aging benefits of olive oil because it helps restore skin smoothness and protects against ultraviolet light. Hydroxytyrosol, a rather rare compound found in olive oil, also prevents free radical damage to the skin.

Shea Butter-produced from the nut of the African shea tree. Shea butter has great moisturizing abilities. The concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids in Shea butter makes it incredibly nourishing and moisturizing for skin. It is often used to remedy dry skin and to help protect the skin's natural oils.
