LEED for Homes

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized energy efficient building certification system. LEED effectively achieves energy efficient building objectives through a series of rating systems which markedly improve sustainability and health performance. LEED certification is ensured through third-party verification. Homes which are verified to meet strict LEED specifications are designed to:

EPA airPLUS Certification

EPA airPLUS are a set of stringent guidelines designed to dramatically improve indoor air quality of Indoor airPLUS qualified homes. Homes which meet the stringent airPLUS guidelines offer a myriad of advantages. Homes must first meet all of the guidelines under the ENERGY STAR label. The ENERGY STAR label ensures these homes will have a dramatically reduced energy consumption.

Indoor airPLUS certification incorporates over 30 additional design and building features which minimize pollutants, increase comfort, protect against combustion pollutants, and offer protective elements to occupants, such as carbon monoxide detectors in all sleeping areas. These additional measures provide a highly elevated level of health and safety for you and your family, in addition to energy efficiency.

Your home will also feature specialized features to protect against moisture and mold. In addition, every Palo Duro home features a passive radon management system. Your new home will receive a label to certify it has been built to meet or exceed stringent Indoor airPLUS standards, establishing higher value if you decide to sell your home in the future.

Palo Duro Homes, Inc. certified its first home to the U.S. Department of Energy Challenge Home program criteria in late 2012, and as of September 2013, the New Mexico production home builder has already certified 65 Challenge Homes, far more than any other builder in the program.

Father and son team Jerry and Tom Wade have a history of high-performance home building. They began working with DOE’s Building America program on research projects to improve production home building nearly a decade ago. As a partner in DOE’s Builders Challenge, they certified 235 homes to Builders Challenge criteria, operating under the name Artistic Homes. Although their name has changed, their dedication to energy efficiency remains as strong as ever.

With construction of their first DOE Challenge Home, the company has committed to Challenge Home Certification, ENERGY STAR for Homes Version 3, and EPA Indoor airPLUS Certification on every home it builds.

The company’s first DOE Challenge Home, in Aztec, New Mexico, was also certified to the LEED for Homes Gold standard. One of the remarkable things about Palo Duro’s homes is how ordinary they look. Palo Duro is building an exceptionally high-performance product and making it affordable for the average home buyer. With prices in the range of $250,000 to $350,000, these incredibly efficient homes are within the reach of the working class.

The efficiency starts with an ordinary wood-framed wall done very well, with 2×6 rather than 2×4 framing and studs spaced 24 inches rather than 16 inches apart, so the wall is sturdy but has a deeper cavity for insulation. Other advanced framing measures like open headers above windows and doors on non-load-bearing walls, 2-stud rather than 3-stud corners, and single top plates and bottom plates mean
