The History Story of Church of the Nazarene in Payson
The Church of the Nazarene in Payson, Arizona began with a survey conducted by District Superintendent Dr. M.L. Mann, to determine the viability of planting a new church in the community. Concluding that interest did in fact exist, several Nazarene pastors from the Phoenix area were recruited to help get this fledgling work up and running.

The very first service was held at 3:00 p.m. on June 9, 1968 in the home of Emma E. Brown. Following a time of singing and testimonies, Rev. Jerry W. White brought a message from Matthew 28:16-20. The sixteen persons in attendance accepted Rev. White’s challenge, and an infant church was born. Mid-week prayer meetings, and Sunday Bible Classes were conducted from that day forward.

The church was officially organized as First Church of the Nazarene, Payson, Arizona on Sunday, May 25, 1969 under the leadership of Dr. M.L. Mann, and the founding pastor, Rev. Charles Bullock. Eleven charter members were received on that day, with seven more joining prior to the close of the charter.

Services were originally conducted in a one-bedroom rental home. The first parsonage was a two-bedroom, 12′ x 60′ mobile home furnished by the Arizona District.
