Perquimans County Library began its start in 1937 in a small white building less than two blocks from its current location.
The current library is the site of the former Hertford Grammar School cafeteria. The school itself burned down in 1956 leaving the lunchroom which was later converted into the county library.
In 1977, Perquimans County Library joined the Pettigrew Regional Library System, a statewide assocation of library systems, and remains a part of Pettigrew Regional, a four-county library system.
