More about Plateau United Methodist Church

The community and church of Plateau dates back to 1860, when it was know as Keeversville. In 1866, Keeversville was the third largest town in Catawba County with a population of 700. The town boasted a drug store, a public well, several general stores, a barber shop, a shingle mill, a saw mill, and a cotton gin. There was even a school in the town for at least 45 years; in 1886, there were 86 pupils enrolled. In 1922, the town grew to include a garage and a molasses mill. By the 1950s, the corner grocery store and garage had opened. Keeversville had its own post office as well. The post office was established on April 11, 1881 and served the town until it was discontinued on May 31, 1907, when the mail was routed to Newton. On December 7, 1888, Keeversville was officially renamed Plateau, due to the plateau on which the community sat.

Early on, Plateau was part of a circuit of eight churches, which included Bethel, Ebenezar, Crowell Memorial, Zion, Palm Tree, Russell's Chapel and Wesley Chapel. These churches were known as the South Fork Charge and was in the Gastonia district. Church at Plateau was held every fourth Sunday at 3:00. By the mid-1920s and early 1930s, the churches had formed a Women's Society of Christian Service group and a youth group called the Epworth League.

In 2010, Plateau United Methodist Church celebrated 150 years of spiritually guiding our community. There have been so many members walking through our church's doors whose lives have been touched by such a small country church. Th is our hope that Plateau will continue to show God's love in our community for the next 150 years and beyond.
