Pleasant Hill Cemetery - Henderson County NC

The first burial in what is now known as Pleasant Hill Cemetery is believed to be Sarah Elizabeth Barton Drake who died during the civil war around 1865. The land was largely donated by the Drake family and could have been known as Drake Cemetery during its early years. There are up to six generations of Drake family members buried in the cemetery. The cemetery contains the graves of many that lived in this community including the Brown, Camp, Capps, Johnson, Laughter, Prince, and Summey families.

Pleasant Hill Cemetery is located on Kanuga Road about 3 1/2 miles from Hendersonville. From Main Street in Hendersonville, turn right onto Caswell Street that becomes Kanuga Street after crossing Church Street. Continue on until Kanuga Street becomes Kanuga Road. The cemetery is located on the right side on the corner of Kanuga Road and Old Kanuga Road.

According to the book "Postmarks" by Lenoir Ray, the Pleasant Hill Community was known as Delmont. It had a post office that was established on July 20, 1881. At some point the name was changed and is today called Pleasant Hill. According to Ray the name Pleasant Hill was derived from "Pleasant Hill" the estate of William Johnstone, son of Andrew Johnston who built Beaumont. William built Pleasant Hill in 1839 and sole it to Dr. Means in 1858.
