What is Residential Health Care?

Residential Health Care is a level of services available for people who are capable of taking care of them selves, but who may need assistance and support.

Who lives at Portage Manor?

A wide variety of people live here. St. Joseph County residents over age 65 find that Portage Manor is a supportive retirement home. People between 18 and 65 with a physical or mental disability also make their home with us. We are proud to note that people come here for the assistance we offer, but often move into more independent settings after having to “get on their feet” with treatment programs in South Bend.

What kinds of services are at Portage Manor?

We have an excellent Medical Doctor on staff who is here weekly to address resident needs.
We have nursing staff on duty 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Delicious home-style meals are prepared here and served in our dining room
Special diets ordered by doctors can be prepared
Housekeepers help keep our historic building beautiful
Bed linens and laundry are cleaned weekly
Activities are scheduled every day
We have our own van that makes trips to town several times a month for shopping, library visits and other special events.
Our private bank makes personal spending money available weekdays
A local mental health center, provides individual and group counseling and case management.
Other treatment programs to meet your individual needs are coordinated with agencies in South Bend

What if I do my own laundry and activities?


Washers & dryers are provided for those of you who do your own laundry. You may choose what you want to do each day. We have a wide variety of activities scheduled because we have people with so many different interest and abilities. We encourage everyone to do as much for him or her selves as possible.

What if I want to visit my friends and relatives?
Visitors are encouraged and welcomed from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. each day.
After a two-week orientation, you may come and go as you wish. Day “Passes” from the nursing staff let us know when to expect you back and what medications you need to take with you. Residents do not keep cars here, but the city bus (Transpo) comes by every half hour.

How can I live at Portage Manor?

To find out more about becoming a resident at Portage Manor, call the Admissions Coordinator, Monday – Friday at (574) 272-9100. We can schedule a tour for you. After you fill out our admission packet, the admissions committee will review financial records and medical records. All applications will be considered.

How much does Portage Manor Cost?

Our private pay rate is $60.00 per day and financial assistance is available for those whose monthly income is less than $1501.06 and whose total assets is less than $1500.00. Indiana’s Assistance to Residents in County determines these guidelines. You show proof of income and assets and we help you apply for assistance.
