Powder Coating Manufacturing Process

While the powder coating technology was born over fifty years ago, it is considered today as the alternative paint technology for a sustainable solvent-free coatings future. This is due to its economical and ecological advantages when compared to liquid coatings.

Powder Coatings are manufactured in three steps; raw material pre-mixing, extrusion and micronizing, resulting in a fine powder. Depending on the specific application, powder coatings are available in various chemistries, colors, effects, finishes and textures.

In contrast to liquid coatings, powder coatings do not contain solvents. They are applied with electrostatic spray guns or in a tribostatic process, then melted and chemically cross-linked at substrate temperatures ranging between 320-400 °F. The film resulting from this process has thermosetting qualities; contrary to thermoplastics that soften if heated after curing.

Powder coatings add mystery and reveal fascinating concealed angles depending on the desired effect. They are suitable for interior and exterior applications and can be applied to metal, glass, MDF, clay and ceramic.
