More about Ralph Bunche Elementary & High School

Ralph Bunche School was previously Waelder Colored School. Under the guidance of Principal Floyd Daniel Taylor the school was renamed in 1954 or 1955 for Dr. Ralph Bunche, a Nobel Peace Prized winner; Dr. Ralph Bunche was also a black man. Professors. Taylor, Derry, Carrol and Dockery; along with Ms. Taylor, Pettit, Marcee, Poole, Evans and Pryor embarked on a new Vision for the school.

It was decided that the school year of 1964-1965 would be the last year that Ralph Bunche would exist. Students Jeremiah Warfield, Jr, Addie Marie Goode, Betty Ann Wilson, Ola V. Warfield and Ella V. Warfield took on that "Yes we can spirit," and asked for a meeting with the supertendent, Mr. Tomlinson , and started a crusade to keep Ralph Bunche open another year. Those student were so true to the School song that they wanted Ralph Bunche High School on their diplomas. They won and Ralph Bunche School was closed at the end of the 1965-1966 school year.
