More about Regulator 7 Firearms Training

NC Concealed Carry Handgun and NRA First Steps Pistol Class

1. General. In recognition of the various levels of handgun knowledge and competence possessed by citizens who wish to obtain North Carolina permits to carry concealed handguns, Regulator 7 Firearms Training presents a two-part training program developed by G.E. Shuford, National Rifle Association (NRA) Sr Training Counselor at the Wake County Firearms Training facility.

a. Part One Training Program. The first part of training is based on the NRA’s 1st Steps Pistol Training Course. It requires approximately four (4) hours of classroom instruction.

b. Part Two Training Program. The second part of training consists of an in-depth classroom instruction program on the local, state and federal laws pertaining to the concealed carry and the use of handguns for personal protection and a series of practical shooting qualification exercises. This second course requires approximately four (4) hours of combined classroom and open-book test completion. The shooting qualification is completed at the end of the eight (8) hour classroom work.

4. Handgun Familiarization. Students who have limited knowledge of, and competence with handguns receive an introduction to shooting handguns with special emphasis on concealed carry techniques.

5. Course Basics. The course is designed to only address the basics; i.e., basic knowledge, basic skills, and attitudes - the essential foundation to owning and using a handgun safely. The legal requirements of the course will be based on the publication “Laws Governing Concealed Handgun and Use of Deadly Force” that has been prepared by the North Carolina (NC) Justice Academy and subsequent changes to the law passed by the N.C. General Assembly.

6. Teaching Method. The concept of "discovery learning" used is the hands-on learning. Step-by-step teaching methods are used ranging from the simple to complex. The courses are designed to be applicable to any handgun; i.e., center fire, rim fire, semi-automatic, or revolver.

7. Written Examination. At the end of the course there will be a written examination consisting of 20 multiple choice questions and 20 true/false questions on the legal and practical requirements of firearms and concealed carry. A score of 80% will be required to pass the examination. The completed examination will be retained in the files of the Instructor. In the event the student fails to pass the course, he/she will be allowed to retake the course, including the classroom portion at a reduced fee.

8. Practical Application. Shooting exercises will be conducted at ranges of three (3), five (5) and seven (7) yards. This range allows the shooter to focus on the fundamentals and therefore ensures a reasonable level of success and confidence.

a. The practical shooting portion of the course will require the student to fire 47 rounds of factory loaded ammunition at various B-34 paper targets.

b. The qualification target with the student's name, date and a description of the pistol/ammunition will be recorded on the qualification target and the qualification score sheet, a photo will be taken of the Student with their target, the student is then welcome to keep the target or dispose of it.

c. The student will be required to have a minimum of 35 hits on target out of 47 shots fired or a “hit rate” of 75%.

9. Shooting Techniques and Firearms Presentations. During lunch, video demonstrations of various shooting techniques and firearms will be shown and discussion of shooting, concealed carry methods, and the legal aspects of concealed carry will be encouraged.
