More about Rockefeller College, Princeton University

John D. Rockefeller 3rd College, or "Rocky", is located in the northwestern corner of the Princeton campus and is largely composed of Collegiate Gothic style structures. As a four-year college, Rocky houses and advises freshmen and sophomores, and advises students in all four class years. Resident graduate students, faculty fellows, and a dedicated college administrative staff are also part of this learning community. A theater, classrooms, common spaces, and a dining hall are all within the college. About 500 freshmen and sophomores live in four buildings: Holder Hall, Buyers Hall (formerly "East Blair Hall"), part of Campbell Hall, and Witherspoon Hall.

The college staff is led by the Head of College (a faculty member), and also includes a dean, a director of studies, a college administrator, a college secretary, and two graduate student assistant masters. The current Head of Rockefeller College is Jeff Nunokawa, Professor of English. A council of current students also contributes to college life, organizing trips, study breaks, and other opportunities.

Rockefeller College's common room, Holder Hall, and Blair Arch (which adjoins Buyers Hall but is technically a part of Mathey College) were all featured in the film A Beautiful Mind.

John D. Rockefeller 3rd College was created in September 1982, one of five residential colleges established in the 1980s, following the recommendation of the Committee on Undergraduate Residential Life. Trustee Laurance S. Rockefeller '32 gave $5 million in April 1980, later augmented by $1.5 million more from the Rockefeller family, to redevelop the northwest corner of the campus, including part of the former Commons, in commemoration of his brother John D. Rockefeller 3rd '29, one of America’s leading philanthropists.

In dedicating the college on October 16, 1983, President William G. Bowen noted that “Rockefeller College will serve as a fitting tribute to a man who cared all of his life about the restoration of historical buildings, the landscaping of open spaces, and most importantly of all, the lives of young people and the enrichment of the human spirit.”
