More about RockHouse Live Midtown

RockHouse Live Midtown is actually an interesting place. The room has a lot of history - the former The Poplar Lounge, and another bar before that - some seem to think it was a place called the Patio, and before that, the Horseshoe Inn (or Lounge). We have cleaned it up, have a full bar, and a full kitchen. NOW FEATURING DELIVERY for our awesome food from UberEats and ChefShuttle!

Here are a few tidbits and lore about the place that you might find interesting:

- Many pivotal scenes in the Oscar-Winning Craig Brewer film, Hustle & Flow were filmed in our place when it was the Poplar Lounge. If you check the photos on the page, you will see some familiar sights (if you have visited us), although we have updated the place a bit since the film was made. And if you haven't visited, come check it out.

- ZZ Top indeed made a video at our room. It took quite a bit of digging, But the video "My Head's in Mississippi" was filmed there. If you note the two screen grabs below, You will see the band is playing in front of the two picture windows at the front of the building (where the stage area used to be located back in the day). The video was filmed in 1990. So if ZZ Top can play there, then its good enough for your band. Here's the full link if you want to watch the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0968f0VWvd8

- Over the years countless famous musicians have come into the room and either hung out and jammed or both. Some of them include John Entwhistle (the Who), Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), John Prine, Lucinda Williams, and many, many more.

- The original owner of the Poplar Lounge robbed a bank a few years ago. He owned the bar for more that 20 years. The original Poplar Lounge was located across the street. They sawed the bar in half and literally ran it across Poplar Ave during rush hour. The same bar is still in RHL Midtown.

- When we opened RHL Midtown in Aug 2014 after Poplar Lounge closed, we committed to keeping the history of the place alive, and giving it a thorough cleaning and a little makeover. What you will find now is a very cozy place which is now starting to again gain attention for all of the amazing music that we book there.

- Shortly after we opened, we booked legendary LA rockers Faster Pussycat to play at RHL Midtown. The show was nothing short of amazing, with these guys tearing it up just like they would have done in some little bar on the sunset strip back in the day.

- The building itself was actually built in 1922. It was previously a car dealership. The basement has a hole in the cement floor where at one time there was a lift. Cars could drive into the basement shop, where repairs were done.

We are sure there is also a lot more "lore" to this room that I'm unaware of - and by all means, if you have photos of our building or events or people there back in the day as Poplar Lounge or any of the other places, please do post and share that info with me. I'm going to set up a page devoted to the incredible history of this little place. And until then, we hope you will visit and have a beer, and check out how cool it really is.
