Route 66 Rescue Inc.

As many of our friends know, we have never given up our goal to have a no-kill shelter in SW MO. In Springfield, the City Pound picks up strays and turn-ins within the city limits. Rescue groups have been doing a wonderful job saving dogs from the pound if they are not pitbull or pit mixes. The Humane Society takes all dogs and cats with a surrender fee, but because they do not turn animals away, they kill for space. There is a huge need for a no-kill facility that accepts strays and owner turn-ins who will otherwise be discarded to starve to death or to die on the street.

That said, those strays and dumped dogs are left to be saved by individuals and rescues, and we are doing the best we can. However, the numbers are staggering, and we cannot keep up with the need. For this reason we are founding Route 66 Rescue Inc., with the intention of opening a shelter in the future. Of course, we are well aware of the length of this process. We do not yet have a site, and we are definitely still at square one. We have no illusions about the rocky path ahead, but we are dedicated to the cause and with the help of a very caring community, we will reach our goal.
