What is RSVP and how does it work? RSVP provides volunteer opportunities for persons age 55 and over. The purpose of RSVP is to engage the skills, talent, experiences and hobbies of individuals age 55 and over to community projects and organizations needing volunteer talent.
Participation in RSVP is part of a nationwide effort, where hundreds of thousands of mature volunteers are answering the call to help address needs in their local communities. As part of a a national program, RSVP is partially funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency. In addition, RSVP receives financial support from the State of Iowa, the City of Fort Madison and the Fort Madison Area Unity Way.
RSVP was established nationally in 1971. The local program began in July 1984 and has been sponsored by the City of Fort Madison since its beginning. RSVP serves the northern half of Lee County and operates with the assistance of an Advisory Council comprised of a diverse group of community members who provide perspective and assistance to the program. The Advisory Council meets bi-monthly and serves as a liaison between RSVP and the community in a supportive/advocate role.
