The Russell Theatre closed its doors as a theatre in 1983. In the years after its closing as a theatre, the Russell Theatre was home to several business until it was finally abandoned. While abandoned the roof was damaged in a storm which left the theatre exposed to the elements. Finally in 1995, a group of citizens stepped up and formed a nonprofit organization called the Russell Theatre Corporation and purchased the theatre. This group is dedicated to restoring the Russell Theatre to its golden years and reopening the theatre.
