More about Saint Marianne Cope Shrine & Museum

The museum is dedicated to the life and legacy of Saint Marianne Cope. Saint Marianne is honored as a leader in the field of health care, education and of her own congregation. Christened Maria Anna Barbara Koob (1838–1918), she was a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Syracuse. She was instrumental in founding St. Joseph’s Hospital—the first hospital in New York to offer care regardless of race, nationality, creed or ability to pay. Later Saint Marianne responded to a call to care for the sick in Hawaii. She devoted 35 years to caring for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) on Kalaupapa, Molokai. Saint Marianne was canonized Oct. 21, 2012. She is the first Franciscan woman from North American to be canonized, and only the 11th American saint. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2005.

Through displays showcasing her stories and artifacts, audio-visual exhibits, and educational outreach, we are able to share her message of respect and compassion. A first class relic of Saint Marianne lies within a reliquary made specially in her honor and rests in our second gallery, offering visitors an opportunity for peaceful contemplation. This gallery serves as a gathering space for presentations, workshops and special Masses.
