More about Salvation Army of Dane County

We serve the needs of the Dane County community in many ways. Here is an overview:
- Family Shelter. We are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, to provide food, shelter, clothing, and safety to parents and children in need. We accommodate 22 families (about 60 people) in the shelter. One-third of the parents that stay with us are working. We serve 160 families annually; the majority of people staying with us find permanent housing at the end of their shelter stay.
- Family Stabilization which serves families exiting the Homeless Shelter or are at risk of losing current housing. On average, 90% of our families are still in their apartments after one year. Some day-to-day living assistance is provided by supplying essential items such as diapers, toilet paper, grooming needs, etc.
- Single Women’s Homeless Shelter. We can accommodate up to 30 women per night on a first-come basis. Stays are limited, but extensions may be granted to women working with case managers to find permanent jobs and housing. During the past year, 532 women, ranging in age from 18 to 87, were served at the shelter.
- Holly House for Single Women. We can accommodate up to 8 women whoare able to stay up to 24 months while becoming self-sufficient members of the community.
- Overflow Shelter. We provide emergency shelter year round. This ensures homeless persons are warm, safe, and well-fed. Each month the shelter provides some 60 clients about 390 nights of shelter, plus case management services.
- Food Pantry. We serve residents of Dane County who meet income guidelines. Serving up to 30 families every day. Each family may use the pantry once a month.
Our food pantry depends on cash and in-kind contributions from individuals and groups.
- Christmas Programs. Our programs help brighten the holidays for many needy individuals through the generosity of Dane County community. These programs include: Angel Tree: 500 gifts provided, Adopt-a-Family: 250 families, Christmas food boxes: 3,000 families, Toys for Tots (in cooperation with the U.S. Marine Corps): 3,000 families, Visits to nursing homes and shut-ins
