San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy

San Diego Zoo Global is a conservation organization dedicated to the science of saving endangered species worldwide. San Diego Zoo Global operates three world-class facilities: the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.

Our conservation work takes place locally at these 3 campuses and reaches beyond to more than 140 conservation field projects in 80 countries. Our organization’s vision is to lead the fight against extinction. Our unique and focused approach brings people and groups together to collaborate on solutions, and we take an innovative and multidisciplinary approach to some of the most daunting conservation challenges of our time.

And we have succeeded with many species! To date, we have reintroduced more than 35 species back into the wild including: mountain yellow-legged frogs, 5 species of reptiles, 17 species of birds, and 10 species of mammals. In many cases, these efforts have meant the difference between extinction and survival.

We have been instrumental in helping to increase the number of giant pandas at China’s Wolong Breeding Center from 25 bears to more than 100.

We have made major contributions to saving the California condor from extinction, helping to increase the population from only 22 birds to more than 400, and releasing the first birds back to the wild in Baja California, Mexico.

Collaborating with the U.S. Navy, our San Clemente loggerhead shrike project has helped repopulate this songbird from just 14 birds to more than 70.

Scientists working in the lab analyze over 3,000 samples each year and have discovered more than a dozen previously unidentified protozoa, bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

Our Wildlife Diseases Laboratories are taking an active role in saving amphibians by screening for chytrid fungus to keep frog populations healthy.
