Sandusky County Convention & Visitors Bureau is a great resource to get information about Sandusky County’s parks, restaurants and attractions. The Visitors Bureau can assist in planning your vacation or visit and most of our hotels and attractions are group and bus tour friendly. With the county being located so close to Lake Erie (15 min), the Lake Erie Island ferries (19 min) and Cedar Point (35 min), we are close to it all without the high costs of food and lodging you will experience by staying at the lake, on the islands or at Cedar Point. We are also easy to get to, just off exit 91 of the Ohio Turnpike.
There is so much to see and do in Sandusky County and at the heart of it all is Fremont, Ohio, http://www.fremontohio.org. Fremont is located in the center of Sandusky County and was home to our Nation's 19th President, Rutherford B. Hayes. The Hayes home, museum and library, which sits on his 25 acre estate boast the honor of being our nation's first presidential library! http://rbhayes.org. The Hayes Center is open daily and tours are given of the home, museum and library. There is also the Historic Sandusky County Jail and 1840’s era Dungeon that is fascinating to tour, event dates are limited but well worth the time to plan your schedule to accommodate. Schedules can be found at: http://www.sanduskycounty.org. We also have beautiful parks and recreation areas, many located along the Sandusky River. Each spring, anglers from all across the country make their way to Fremont, Ohio for the walleye and white bass spring fish runs. Connecting many of the towns across Sandusky County is the North Coast Inland Bike Trail. This paved path takes non-motorized bicyclists across the county and through some of the most beautiful Ohio landscapes that can only be seen from the trail.
Located at the east end of the county is Bellevue, Ohio, http://www.cityofbellevue.com. In Bellevue, you can visit the Mad River Railroad museum, http://www.madrivermuseum.org, to see a lasting tribute to the American Railroad system and walk through and around dozens of railcars including Cabooses and engines. For those who want to put on their hiking shoes, we suggest a guided tour of Seneca Caverns, http://www.senecacavernsohio.com, or a walk through Historic Lyme Village, http://www.lymevillage.com.
To the west is Gibsonburg, Ohio, http://gibsonburgohio.org and Woodville, Ohio, http://villageofwoodville.com. Both are quaint little towns with family style restaurants and mom & pop shops, where employees still know their customers by name and spoil them with excellent customer service. While visiting Gibsonburg, be sure to make a stop at Williams Park to see the Public Safety Service 9/11 Memorial that has a piece of the World Trade Center's North Tower incorporated into its design. Also in the park is the Veteran's Museum and Sculpture in the Village.
In the northwest part of the county is Lindsey, Ohio. Located just on the edge of town is the Wilson Nature Center on Creek Bend Farm, http://www.lovemyparks.com. This recently constructed nature center was built on a Depression Era farm and homestead and allows visitors to learn about Ohio's natural world. Interact with creatures both big and small and wander about this beautiful farm to discover hidden treasures around every bend. The bird watching is amazing each spring and fall. During the migration, tropical birds make their way across Ohio as they travel to and from South America from their breeding grounds in Canada.
Last but not least is Clyde, Ohio, http://clydeohio.org, home to Civil War General James Birdseye McPherson. Here you can visit and tour McPherson's home, tour the Clyde Museum and grab a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants located in the community.
