The project would include the restoration of the Elkhorn City Walk Bridge which was built in 1912 as the only access connecting the two portions of Elkhorn City which was divided by the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River.
The old iron bridge, built in 1912, spans the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy River. It is located in the center of Elkhorn City on what was at one time known as US Highway 80. It is listed on the register of historical places in Kentucky.
Notwithstanding its historical significance, the bridge also make its contribution in the areas of tourism, festivals and has a positive economic impact. It serves as an observation deck and take out destination for rafting, kayaking and canoeing. It also serves as an observation area during area during our several festivals which include; the Apple Blossom Festival in May, Bushwhacking on the Russell Fork Civil War Reeanactment, 4th of July Celebration, White water Festival, Christmas in the City and Fishing Tournaments.
The bridge also greatly enhances the beach area of the City which and is a key part of the Blue Line Trail an art mural pedestrian loop trail in Downtown Elkhorn City. http://www.elkhorncity.org/blueline/aboutbl.html


The bridge was built by the railroad to replace a mile long wagon road that the present railroad travels. Its building enabled folks to access the parts of town cut off by the elimination of the wagon road by the railroad.
