More about Save West Dam

Generations in Custer have grown up with the West Dam lake by the golf course on the west side of town. According to Hobart Gates, who was on the Custer City Council from 1934 - 1942, West Dam was originally built as a simple fishing pond for kids. The lake added beauty to the golf course and added a fun place in town for local kids to fish and play. Gates Park was added in later years with ball fields, a playground and picnic area. However, a few years ago, the lake had to be drained for safety reasons as the dam was a simple berm and was not up to current dam safety standards. Now the time has come to fix West Dam - we want to make it better than ever, enhancing it for better fishing opportunities, adding trails, more fishing docks and picnic areas, plus a fish cleaning station and shade trees. This will add a great deal of recreational opportunities for Custer families and enhance our quality of life. We need your help! This is a $2.3 million project. You can help by donating to fund certain projects as we move through the reconstruction process.
