This shelter was started because of a dream and prayer. There are shelters in Pikeville, and Hazard as well as some of the surrounding counties; however Letcher County does not have one. Brenda Gross (Director and Founder of ECCO) and Bobby Howard (Magistrate District 1) were the 2 people who started talking about a shelter. That slowly grew into Diane Watts being asked to head up the Shelter. There were meetings for the public where people were asked to participate. That crowd slowly dwindled to 11 people: Diane Watts, Jan Galloway, Amy Gross, Bob & Betty Combs, Danielle Adams, Carol Lewis, Wanda Collier,Sharlene Barr, Eugene Sloan, and Jimmy Scott. We also have Brenda Gross, Bobby Howard, Danny Webb, and Jim Ward visit our meetings from time to time. There is a board of Diane Watts, Jan Galloway, Amy Gross, Bob Combs, Sharlene Barr, Eugene Sloan, Danny Webb, and Danny Boggs. We have done fundraisers and worked with many local business to raise money for our shelter. ECCO, The Letcher County Sherriff's Office, and Jim Ward help us in many ways. We have donation jars in Wendy's, Dairy Queen, Long John Silvers, Ky. Farm Bureau, as well as many other business. Our goal is to help those in our county who find themselves as victims of homelessness. Up until now whenever the Sherriff's Dept. was brought someone that Is homeless they were having to find other shelters to take the people to. With this shelter they will no longer have to do that.
