Saxapahaw is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated area in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Burlington, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,648 at the 2010 census.HistoryThe Former Saxapahaw Spinning Mill and James Monroe Thompson House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The name Saxapahaw is from the Catawban /sak'yápha:/, which is composed of /sak/ ("hill") and /yápha:/ ("step").GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.3km2, of which 13.4km2 is land and 0.9km2, or 6.01%, is water.DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 1,418 people, 541 households, and 399 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 270.1 people per square mile (104.3/km²). There were 577 housing units at an average density of 109.9 per square mile (42.4/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 81.24% White, 13.40% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 3.46% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races.
