Scandinavian Athletic Club / SAC Park, Shrewsbury, MA

The Scandinavian Athletic Club was incorporated in 1924 to field soccer teams of primarily men of Scandinavian descent (Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, and Icelandic). Land was purchased in Shrewsbury; fields were cleared and plowed for soccer pitches. A pavilion with an unparalleled timber dome ceiling was built to host weekend dances, cookouts, and socials. In those early days Worcester boasted a population of close to 20% Swedes, many of whom were employed as machinists or skilled laborers at local plants like Norton Company and US Steel. SAC Park was a nexus for area Scandinavian social life. Midsummer celebrations, held every June, were legendary.

Today, a revitalized social club holds club meetings on the first Thursday of each month, beginning with a potluck at 6:00 pm, followed by meetings at 7:00 pm. There are club socials held in the lounge on the remaining Wednesdays of the month. Socials begin at 5:00 pm–a potluck commences around 6:00–and the socials conclude around 8:30. The facilities and grounds are available to the public for functions, banquets, weddings, corporate outings, and the like.

The Dome Room with adjoining Viking Bar has a capacity of 250 guests. Featuring a gleaming hardwood dance floor, stage, sound system, air-conditioning, and the warm ambience of a timbered domed ceiling, the Dome Room is a wonderful location for your event.

The downstairs Lounge, with a capacity of 100, is popular for baby showers, bridal showers, class reunions, birthday parties and other functions.

The outdoor covered pavilion can seat 300 at benched tables, has a stage, is lighted, and is serviced by an outdoor bar and a covered food service area.

Outdoor recreational opportunities include a regulation soccer pitch, volleyball court, basketball hoops, horseshoe pits and swingset.
