History of Scott’s Funeral Home

Morton Scott moved to Gatesville in 1907 and purchased a furniture business that had operated in Gatesville since 1882. He opened up the only mortuary in town inside that same building on the west side of the square in Downtown Gatesville. The business occupied one building with the mortuary on the second floor. Soon the space became inadequate, so in 1942 Morton Scott purchased the current property and built the funeral home. After his son, Robert Scott, completed school he went into business with his father and they changed the name to Morton Scott & Son. Morton retired in 1947 and turned the business over to his children, Robert and Lois Scott. Then in 1974 after Robert Scott died the third generation began to manage the business under Bob Scott. He managed the business until 1978, until he wanted to pursue his law career and he sold the funeral business to Gary Beasley and the furniture store to Clay McClellan, who still operates what is now Leaird’s. Beasley operated the business for 21 years before it was bought by a National Provider in 1999. In 2007 the funeral home celebrated a 100 Years of Service to our community and new ownership once again. In July of 2007, Bill Cole, long time employee and Gatesville native along with Ronnie Viss, who has been with the firm since 2003, purchased the funeral home. In 2011, the firm welcomed Daren Moore to the staff as full time funeral director.
