Sheriff's Safety Town

Sheriff's Safety Town, a project of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, is designed to protect children by teaching safety skills and allowing them to practice those skills in a safe environment. A child-sized town with miniature streets, buildings, crosswalks and working traffic lights offers the perfect setting for bicycle, pedestrian and vehicular safety instruction.

Following classroom instruction, all Caddo Parish second graders will take a field trip to Sheriff's Safety Town. Here, miniature electric cars, bicycles, and pedestrians share the road as students demonstrate the safety concepts they have learned. The visual impact of Safety Town reinforces what the students learn in class. Children from eight parishes and five Texas counties have participated in our primary safety program, which takes place each school year and is designed specifically for second graders. We've partnered with nearly 90 schools to provide our youth with an experience second to none.

The primary safety program includes instruction and hands-on demonstration in each of the following areas:

• Gun Safety
• Weather Safety
• 9-1-1
• Stranger Danger

• Natural Gas Safety
• Natural Gas Well Site Safety

In just under three years, more than 25,000 participants have gained valuable safety skills and knowledge through our unique, cutting-edge programs. Safety Town's popularity has resulted in the development of numerous other safety-related programs, which include but are not limited to the following:

• Summer Mini Camps (offered to 1st through 8th graders)
• Bike Rodeos (offered throughout the year to 1st through 8th graders)
• Kids' Crime Scene Investigation Camps (3-day camp offered four times each year to 11 & 12 year olds)
• Distracted & Impaired Driver Courses (offered throughout the year to young drivers)
• Hunter Safety Classes (offered throughout the year to all ages)
• A.A.R.P. Driving Courses (offered throughout the year to senior citizens)
• Specialized Safety Awareness Programs (throughout the year as needed/requested)
