In November of 2013, Ms. Elizabeth “Betty” Mahler donated her family’s 167-acre estate with an antebellum home to the City of Montevallo to be developed into Shoal Creek Park. Once part of a larger 800-acre farm owned by the Perry Family, this property is now cherished as a public historic and recreation site. Shoal Creek runs through the park providing numerous scenic vistas and areas for enjoying the shoals. A dedicated group of volunteers has developed over a mile of hiking trails with plans for further development. The park features this walking trail and a 50-vehicle parking lot for public use by permission only until a pavilion and restroom facilities are available. A city-formed advisory committee is working to define the scope and vision of the park as well as secure funding for park development. To arrange for small group or individual access, to volunteer to assist or to donate to the park, contact Montevallo City Hall (205) 665-2555 or sbyrd@cityofmontevallo.com.
