The Tribal Health and Human Services Department initiated the concept of a "Wellness Center" in their 2000 strategic plan, as requested by the tribal community. In 2006, the Council approved the university-researched feasibility study to assess how a Wellness Center would serve the community's health needs and disparities, among them, heart disease and diabetes.
By January 2010, the Council passed another resolution allowing for fuller development of the Wellness Center Plan. About this time, the Council appointed a coordinator who in turn, formed a committee, which evolved into a Board of Directors with By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation. Today, the Shoshone-Bannock Wellness Center & Sports Complex awaits confirmation for 501(c) 3 nonprofit status. A Project Manager oversees the design contract with FFKR Architects, and also oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs' approval of an Environmental Assessment. The $25 million, 122,000 square-foot Wellness Center will reflect the proud tradition and culture of the Shoshone-Bannock People.
A Capital Campaign underway seeks resources from the community, corporate, private and public grants. The board recently received a Tony Hawk Foundation Skate Park grant; construction will begin spring of 2012.
