Skills Unlimited became incorporated in 1954 and opened its doors to the Long Island community in 1955. Our basic goals have remained the same and that is to offer persons with disabilities the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential.

Since 1955 we have added a variety of programs and services based primarily on the needs of the consumers that we serve and the demands of the labor market. Our programs are unique in that by offering comprehensive services, individuals are able to deal with many different issues that could potentially affect their vocational success.

Any individual that has an impairment that interferes with their ability to work is entitled to the services that we offer.

Choosing an occupation is not an easy task. Often people are very confident that they know what they want while others have no idea. Many factors have to be considered in making this decision.

In order to help individuals reach a realistic choice we offer a vocational assessment before deciding on a training program. This assessment includes a variety of paper and pencil tests, academic testing, aptitude testing and work samples to assess the person's present abilities, how they would do after training and in what areas they have limitations and strengths.

An opportunity to try out a training program is also an option. It allows the consumer and the instructor to see how they would function in the program. At the completion of the assessment, a plan is developed by both the professional staff and consumer, and includes the steps necessary to reach that goal.
