Smedley Crane and Rigging

The Smedley Company was established in 1860 and has been under the present ownership of the Palmer Family for the past four generations. Currently the officers are William R. Palmer IV, President, James Palmer, V.P., William R. Palmer III, Treasurer, and Sylvia Page Palmer, Secretary.

Originally the company’s private markets were General Merchandise, Warehousing Household Goods, Storage and Moving, Transportation and Rigging. The Smedley Company has serviced these industries throughout the Northeast since its inception. The company was an original shareholder of the Allied Van Lines Corporation as well as a prime warehouse and forwarding service for such companies as Armstrong Rubber, Winchester Repeating Arms, Pond Lilly and AVCO Lycoming, to mention a few.

The focus has shifted in the past fifty years to more concentration in the markets of heavy hauling, rigging, plant relocations, crane rentals and millwright work. The company has seen steady growth in these areas and has developed a diversified clientele base.
The Smedley Company now has a fleet of state-of-the-art cranes ranging in capacity from 15 tons to 300 tons, encompassing all-terrain, rough-terrain, crawler and hydraulic truck cranes. This is coupled with a modern fleet of tractor-trailers, gantries, forklifts, aerial lifts and a new terminal located at 40 Flax Mill Road, Branford, CT.

Our customer base is upwards of 500, servicing a variety of markets not limited to but including pharmaceutical, chemical, food, power and industrial corporations.

Our rigging capabilities have taken us as far as Europe, China and various other parts of the world. The Smedley Company is a modern state-of-the-art operation, with New England’s largest and newest fleet of cranes and tractor trailers.
