Smith Creek Church of the Brethren

Smith Creek is a congregation in the Shenandoah District of the Church of the Brethren, a Christian denomination founded in 1708 in Schwarzenau, Germany. Due to religious persecution the entire denomination fled to the Pennsylvania colony. We practice baptism by triple immersion, the love feast (foot washing, a fellowship meal, and bread and cup communion), anointing for healing and dedication to service, and the laying on of hands during prayer. The folks hat Smith Creek have been meeting for worship since sometime before the Civil War. Our first meeting house was built in 1893 with help from the Cooks Creek Congregation in Virginia. We were organized as an independent congregation in 1918. Our current meeting house was built in 1950. Our typical worship service includes prayer, singing, instrumental music, a sermon (or lesson based an a passage from the Holy Bible), an invitation to follow Jesus, join the church, or to rededicate one's life to serving God, and a blessing and sending to serve in Jesus' name.
