Soundmine Recording Academy

In addition to our 4 hour classes, Soundmine Recording Academy offers a ten-week course ideal for beginner through intermediate audio engineers who want to improve technique and sound quality for professional recordings and mixes.

Each student in the small group will be learning hands-on, inside the studio – a minimum of 72 hours – a highly valuable opportunity for any aspiring engineer.

Students will be instructed in these techniques:

• Secret ingredients the pros use to make great recordings and
mixes
• Tips and tricks to help become a knowledgeable and
valuable engineer
• Setting up and recording a pro session with confidence
• How to use Pro Tools
• Studio set-up, tools, and equipment advice to make a great
home studio
• How to get the best sound out of any studio
• How to develop a lasting rapport with clients

After ten sessions, your small group will receive more significant learning experiences at Soundmine Recording than you would in any other similar learning experience our audio instructors know of-–at a fraction of the price.

With a working knowledge of the basics and tricks of the trade under your belt, you will quickly understand how to improve sound quality in a studio and gain the confidence to expand and achieve your musical goals.

We are serious about your learning and future in the industry. Many institutions of higher learning offer audio engineering majors, but we have found that these students do not receive the real-world experience they need to work in a pro studio.

You will develop a valuable connection with the instructor, your new resource in helping you achieve your engineering goals both during and after the course.

Course Outline

Week 1: Introduction to the Studio – Facility, Acoustics, and Studio Design.
Week 2: Microphones – Dynamics, Condensers, Tube Mics, Placement Demo
Week 3: The Gear – Console, Preamps, EQ’s, Compressors.
Week 4: ProTools – Hardware/Software, Converters, HD Cards, I/O’s, Basics.
Week 5: ProTools – Overview and Demonstration Recording Session.
Week 6: Tracking Sessions – Demo: Do a practice session.
Week 7: Student Tracking Session - Do a FULL tracking session.
Week 8: Mixing Sessions – Demo: Edit, Mix (Group, EQ, Compress, Effects)
Week 9: Student Mixing Sessions – Do a FULL mixing session.
Week 10: Mix review, Q&A, Designing and expanding your own studio and career.

Length: One 3 hour session each Sunday and Monday night from 6 pm – 9 pm for 10 weeks and two 6 hours sessions (times to be arranged between student and instructor) recording, mixing, and mastering a band and/or artist.

Start Date: Spring sessions are scheduled to begin February 8, March 8, April 5, and May 3, 2015. Students may begin on any of these dates.

Requirements: Students must be at least 16 years of age and have some basic recording experience.

Cost: The total cost of the entire course is economically priced at $4,000.00. Easy payment plans are available. Save $500 with a one-time payment before the session begins.

Private Sessions with Dan Malsch

Brand new to recording or advanced, we offer customized training to help you reach your engineering goals. You can choose from the following:


• Easily learn the basics of recording
• Advance a specific skill set (mixing, vocal recording, mastering,
etc.)
• Learn Pro Tools HD
• Learn how to use an analog console (SSL, Trident), tape
machine, and gear
• Bring your own artist with whom to work


When he is not mixing, Soundmine Recording’s founder and chief engineer Dan Malsch mentors students for both The Recording Connection and Soundmine Recording Academy. His patience and passion for audio engineering has inspired engineers and musicians for many years.
