South End Community Health Center

The South End Community Health Center (Health Center) was established in 1969 by Dr. Gerald Hass, a renowned pediatrician, together with Mel Scovell, a retired business man from the shoe industry, in response to a plea from a group of poor and underserved South End mothers who were seeking quality health care for their children. The Health Center was first created as a pediatric center and after a few years started to expand and change according to the needs of the community. Today, it is a full-service health organization with adult/family medicine, pediatrics, dental, eye care, obstetrics and gynecology, behavioral health and WIC services. Our dedicated staff provides high-quality, culturally and linguistically accessible health care to 19,000 patients accounting for nearly 80,000 visits annually. After 45 years, we are widely recognized for our outstanding preventive care aimed at children and families, including a growing number of homeless families.
