South Fork Christian Church

2014 marks 170 years of history for the South Fork Christian Church. Like most rural churches, our beginnings were humble. Our first church was a log structure that served as both a church and a schoolhouse. The year was 1844 but the exact date is unknown. The area surrounding the church was once the thriving community of Berkshire, Kentucky, which was home to a steam mill, a general store, a post office and public scales. With the introduction of the automobile and better county roads, the town of Berkshire ceased to exist. But the South Fork Christian Church stood strong.
In the early 1890's, the church built a new building on the exact site where our existing church stands today. The wood frame building was dedicated on Sunday, September 30, 1894, and stood for more than 100 years. In 1974 the sanctuary underwent major remodeling and a new addition housing a kitchen, Sunday School rooms and a nursery was added. In 1988 construction began on a fellowship hall, providing space for additional Sunday School classrooms and fellowship dinners.
Due to unprecedented growth experienced in the late 1990's, our current building was erected in 2004 and dedicated on January 30, 2005. And while a new building has been erected on the same site as our previous building, one only has to look around to see scenes from the past. Five stained glass windows remain and take their place at the front of the sanctuary. The old church bell still rings in Sunday morning worship services.
Expansion loomed on the horizon as the fellowship hall located in the new building quickly had to be turned into classrooms and the former fellowship hall had to be converted to administrative offices to accommodate the needs of the growing congregation. Property located across the street was purchased, and work on an all-purpose building was completed in 2013. The new building houses additional classrooms and a fellowship hall, which also acts as a gymnasium.
For 170 years Christians have gathered on this site to give praise and honor to Jesus, our King. The South Fork Christian Church has stood as a shelter in the time of storm, as a rock built on the foundation of God's Word, and as a light shining bright to a lost world. We look forward to the future that God has in store for us. Until He returns, we will hold steadfast to the charge of, "Changing our community one heart at a time."

Bob Hightchew
Bob has been the Senior Minister of South Fork since 1996. He is a former Marine, serving his country from 1985 through 1993. He has a BS in Ministry and Leadership and a MA in Pastoral Leadership from Cincinnati Christian University. He has served as a board member of the Happy Hills Christian Service Camp in Carrollton, KY since 1991 and has been the President since 2000. Bob also teaches as an adjunct instructor at CCU in their CALL Program and is a member of their Alumni Committee. Bob has been married for 17 years and has three children.

Youth Minister
Chris Wheeler
Chris has been involved in youth ministry for the past 10 years. He has served as the Youth and Young Adults Pastor at The Crossing Christian Church in New Albany Indiana. Chris served there for 4 years. He joined the South Fork staff and family in 2014. He is currently finishing school at Louisville Bible College.

Children's Ministry Director
Kristin King
Kristin has been the Children's Director at South Fork since 2007. She is a former elementary school teacher. She has a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Georgetown College where she played basketball for four years. Kristin has a master's degree in Integrating Technology in the Classroom from Walden University. Kristin also has two children.
