A place for the illegal sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks, as during the Prohibition in the United States. During the period (1920-1933) these places were secretive spots where one could go and get a beer, moonshine or whiskey. You spoke softly when referring to these places and often you needed a "password", "sign", or "symbol" to get in.
