The skin communicates the health of the body to the world. When a body isn't fully nourished, it doesn't have the building blocks required to maintain and repair damaged tissue, be it the organs, bones, blood, muscles or skin. An undernourished person lacks a certain radiance. Her skin is dull and she lacks that twinkle in the eye.
On the other hand, in a state of wellness, nourishment, the body brilliantly tends to each of its tissues, caring and repairing. The skin communicates this state of health by glowing and reflecting light out into the world.
