The initial Episcopal services held in Coeur d'Alene during the 1880's were random gatherings at Fort Sherman by officers, most often held in one of their quarters. The first official service apparently was officiated by a candidate for the priesthood, Fred Sellick, who conducted that service in September of 1891 in the Odd Fellows Hall.
Construction of the church proper was also begun that fall on donated property and the first service occurred in March of 1892, officiated over by The Rev. Herman Page. Although the current building was expanded in the first decade of the twentieth century, it has served this active congregation over all of these years.
St. Luke’s is a member of the larger Episcopal Church, a Protestant denomination having its origin in the Church of England. After the American Revolution, the church "broke away" yet remained in communion with the English church and the other Anglican churches around the world that were begun by the Church of England. All those independent churches make up what is now known as the Anglican Communion.
