More about St. Lukes Lutheran Church

St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church was officially organized on November 11, 1914. On December 8, 1914, the congregation received title to the lot where we built the first church/school. Later on March 17th, 1916, the congregation received title to another four lots one of which we still own today. At the time the first church was built, 30th Avenue was the the city limits of Kenosha. By February 21, 1915, the structure had been completed and members held dedication services. The building measured twenty-eight by fifty feet and cost approximately $2,000.00.

The cornerstone for the new church on 30th Avenue was laid in 1926 and the building was dedicated on October 9, 1927. It is the building in which we worship at the present time. The parsonage is attached to the church on 67th Street and was built at the same time as the church for a total of $51,129.04.

In 1955, St. Luke's was seriously considering the construction of a new school. The old school which had rendered faithful service to the congregation since 1915 had really outlived its usefulness. On March 4, 1956, the congregation voted to build a new four classroom school. It was estimated that the cost of such a school would be about $90,000.00. On Sunday, January 26, 1958, a ground breaking ceremony for the new school was held and the school was dedicated on September 14, 1958.

We have had many building projects in our history. Let us not forget, however, that why our congregation exists at all. It exists to constuct the Church of the Lord. All our members from the very beginning of our congregation were commissioned by our Lord to participate in the work of building the Church.
