St Tikhon's Orthodox Monastery

St. Tikhon's was founded in 1905 in South Canaan, PA, at the urging of the future Archbishop Winnipeg, then Hieromonk Arseny (Chagovtsev). It's mission was to serve as a 'motherhouse' for American monks serving in the new nation and 'where they could return periodically for spiritual renewal.' It was consecrated by Bishop, later 'Saint' Raphel Hawaweeny who appropriately was the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in America itself.

St. Tikhon's close association with the history of American Orthodoxy has remained throughout the years and today, a museum containing the most comprehensive collection of religious articles of all kinds from saints and missionaries associated with America is located on the monastery grounds.

Whle the education of those entering religious service is now carried out by adjacent St. Tikhon's Seminary, the monks continue to work as monks always have making soap, candles, honey, prosphoa and other traditional labor along with modern outreach through STS Press. However, the primary 'work' of the monks is the Liturgy and spiritual struggle in the Orthodox tradition.
