Ste. Genevieve R-II School District celebrates 100 years

STE. GENEVIEVE -- When the school year begins on August 15, 2014, the Ste. Genevieve R-II School District will begin a yearlong celebration to mark its 100th year of assisting students within Ste. Genevieve County achieve their high school diploma.

The district’s first graduating class was The Class of 1915. Members of The Class of 1915 were A. Ross Clark (Class President), Clarence J. Koetting (Vice-President), Roberta F. Meyers (Secretary), Sarah M. Yeager, Felix A. Koetting, Katherine D. Meyers, Walter C. Reeves, Anna G. Vorst, Joseph P. Kiefer, Edwin C. Koetting, and Hilda L. Gisi.

According to "The Echo," the first yearbook published at Ste. Genevieve High School, when the
1914-1915 school term opened, "Ste. Genevieve High School had reached the highest point in its career. We now have a full sixteen-unit course, four teachers in the High School, and four in the Grammar Grades. We have a splendid auditorium and cheerful classrooms. Our school was inspected on February 18, 1915, and accredited first class."

A committee has been formed to plan celebrations for this 100th Anniversary. The committee will be planning and hosting many events throughout the school year. The focus of these events will be the memorabilia, photos and films that personalize the lives of our alumni. Displays will be visible in all four school buildings within the district.

Some events the committee is discussing celebration plans for are homecoming, parent-teacher conferences, the Peggy J. Johnson Gymnasium dedication ceremony, the 100th day of school, as well as various other events.

The district and committee is seeking memorabilia from community members and former graduates to display throughout the school. They are especially interested in mementos from the early years.

Please join the district in this yearlong Centennial Celebration. As events are planned and dates of these events approach, more information will be made available through news releases and on the district’s website www.stegen.k12.mo.us. Also, throughout the school year, patrons should look for the centennial logo created by Mr. John Otto, Ste. Genevieve Middle School art teacher.

The committee is working to create clothing with this logo for patrons to purchase and wear proudly.

Please contact Mrs. Rebecca Faulkner or Dr. Julie Flieg at 573-883-4500 extension 2005 if you have items to loan to the district for display, further information to contribute about the history of the district, or suggestions for the committee to consider for the celebration
