THE LEGEND OF STOGGY HOLLOW

Nestled in a quiet corner of Woodstock, Connecticut, many timely traditions are remembered at Stoggy Hollow General Store. Nostalgic memories of congregating friends, the smell of coffee, friendly conversations and a bit of history are hoping to remain a while longer. In the 1800s, while progress was striding through New England, it paused for a time in Woodstock. Streams were dammed, water wheels turned, axes and saws were put to work. This was the beginning of an era. In 1828, Peletiah and Zenas Wight opened the first shoe factory in Woodstock. Small wooden pegs, used to hold shoes together, were produced from Woodstock Valley's vast timber. These pegs and shoes were called "stoggies." Thus, the valley became know as Stoggy Hollow. The Stoggy Hollow shoe factory grew and prospered until its closing around 1870.
Stoggy Hollow General Store currently occupies the former residence of Woodstock pioneer, Alba Hiscox. The building was built in 1836. Directly across the street is the site of Hiscox's mills and mill pond. Though quiet and pastoral today, Stoggy Hollow was once a thriving mill village. Gone are the mill wheels and factories but what remains is the spirit and enterprise. Once again the name Stoggy Hollow rings throughout Woodstock with pride. We at "Stoggy" hope you enjoy our tradition.
