This A.W. Tillinghast master piece formerly, Fort Monmouth, opened in 1926. The course has hosted such notables as Babe Ruth, Sam Snead, US Open Champion Orville Moody, two-time PGA Champion Gene Sarazen, who set the course record of 65 in 1935. That same year, Byron Nelson, then the head pro of Ridgewood Country Club, won his first pro event, the New Jersey State Open, at Sun Eagles, then known as Monmouth County Country Club.
