We are a Church Plant of the Siaisi Uesiliana Tau’ataina ‘o Tonga, the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga in English.
The F.W.C. began in 1822 through the efforts of British missionaries of the Methodist Societies and became a conference of the Australasian Methodist Church becoming autonomous in 1977.
The Church is based in the Kingdom of Tonga with over 40 % of the population claiming membership or affiliation with the FWC.
The Governor of the Church is H.M. King Tupou VI in a similar capacity as the Queen of England serves within the Church of England.
The polity of the Church is quite similar to that of the British Methodist Church having a president as opposed to a Bishop with ministers being rotated every couple of years.
The FWC also is evangelical in its missionary outreach in New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Is., Hawaii, and Mainland America with small communities in Japan, China and Europe among the Tongan diaspora.
